Braces for Teenagers
Orthodontics for Teenagers
For many teenagers, looking good, a beautiful smile and self-esteem are really important during the years of growth and development.
Teenagers are most commonly seen with braces as this is the time when permanent teeth have come through and any problems become evident. The majority of orthodontic treatment begins between the ages 11 and 15. This is because in the majority of 12 years olds, all of the permanent teeth will have erupted. During puberty facial growth accelerates which helps the orthodontic appliances move teeth more effectively. During this time the teeth have not yet stabilised into place meaning the teeth are much easier to move to their desired position. Treatment can be completed most efficiently at this point.
This is also a good time for orthodontic treatment because many negative associations of braces are not present. Many children in this age range undergo orthodontic treatment, and teenagers are often very happy to wear braces because they see their friends wearing them too.
Call OrthoClinic for an initial examination where we will be able to determine the best time for the treatment and outline the treatment plan, the treatment duration expected, and the approximate cost for the treatment.

Teenagers have the following options to achieve a beautiful smile:
- Metal Braces
Metal braces are the most popular options. Many of our teenage patients love the option of color ties around these to make braces less boring! You can have them changed each visit, you can design your own pattern or even have your team colours; makes things more interesting!
- Ceramic (Clear) Braces
An alternative to metal braces for many older teens and adults, ceramic clear braces are a less noticeable solution to straightening your smile. Many of our teenage patients who are performers or are just concerned about the appearance of braces really appreciate the discretion of ceramic braces.
